As one of Germany's most popular travel destinations, Munich is surrounded by iconic landmarks like Neuschwanstein Castle and the Zugspitze. Add in Oktoberfest—the world's largest party held every September and October—and it's easy to see why travelers usually dedicate several days to exploring the city. However, first-time visitors often have these questions about finding accommodation in Munich:
Tim and Ting answer all these questions in this guide to Munich accommodation. We have curated a list of our top 10 recommendations across budget, mid-range, and luxury tiers. If you're still unsure after reading, check out our final summary at the end of the article for our top picks.

Munich Safety
A Brief Overview of Safety in Munich

When Tim and I were planning our European trip, we often saw Munich described as a "model of safety." Compared to other major European cities, it is indeed very safe with low crime rates and a clean environment. While it may not be quite as pristine as Japan or Taiwan, you generally don't need to worry too much about your safety here.
That said, it isn't immune to petty crime. We recommend keeping these basic precautions in mind:
- 1Keep your valuables out of sight: While tourist areas are relatively safe, pickpockets are common in hotspots—especially at Marienplatz during the Glockenspiel show, on crowded subways, and at the Oktoberfest grounds. Always wear your backpack on your front, keep zippers closed, and store your phone and wallet in internal zippered pockets.
- 2Enjoy the beer, but stay alert: Munich is a city of beer gardens. While it's great to enjoy yourself, stay mindful of your surroundings. Being intoxicated makes you an easy target for pickpockets or scammers.
- 3Ignore beggars and street solicitors: While walking in the city center, you may be approached by beggars or people trying to sell you "lucky" bracelets. Simply say "No" and keep walking. Do not stop or engage in conversation—even if they try to speak to you in other languages—or they may continue to pester you.
Which Areas in Munich are Unsafe? Where to Stay for Peace of Mind?
Although we mentioned that Munich is generally safe, the area south of the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) is the one exception. (See map below)
While this area is a hub for commuters and tourists, the heavy foot traffic attracts pickpockets, homeless individuals, and other sketchy characters. It is also home to the local red-light district, along with numerous bars and casinos, making it feel chaotic and somewhat unsafe after dark. While it is generally fine during the day, we recommend avoiding this area at night and choosing your accommodation elsewhere.
So, where should you stay for a safer experience? We highly recommend the following neighborhoods. Beyond being safe, they offer excellent amenities, proximity to major attractions, and a comfortable atmosphere.
- 1Altstadt (Old Town): This area puts you within walking distance of the city's most iconic sights, including Marienplatz, the Viktualienmarkt, and the Munich Residenz.
- 2Near the English Garden: Located close to the university, this area is packed with trendy cafes and offers a quiet, authentic local vibe. It perfectly balances lush greenery with urban convenience, making it the best spot to experience daily life like a local.

Where to Stay in Munich
Average Accommodation Costs in Munich
Accommodation in Munich typically ranges from €120 to €250 per night. It is widely considered one of the most expensive cities in Germany for lodging—even pricier than the capital, Berlin. Prices during Oktoberfest can be astronomical, often 2-3 times higher than usual. To help you plan, we have compiled a guide to average double-room rates during low and high seasons.
Pro Tip: You may notice that accommodation costs are also quite high in April. This is due to several world-class trade fairs held in Munich, combined with the Easter holiday (Ostern), one of Germany's most important breaks.
